Ashley Kirley – Animal Care Specialist
Animal Care Specialist, CFMM
Profile & Research Interests
I have always had an interest in laboratory animals which lead to my decision to pursue a career in research. My goal as an Animal Care Specialist is to ensure that each animal in my care is treated kindly and respectfully.
I began work at The Robarts Research Institute in The Centre for Functional and Metabolic Mapping in July of 2013. My initial position with CFMM was working in the 9.4T Facility as an Animal Care Technician. In September for 2014, I relocated to the 7T MRI Facility where I function as the Animal Care Specialist for the area. In this position, I consult with staff, students and principle investigators wishing to use the facility for animal related studies. Our meetings include drafting appropriate protocols, scheduling imaging sessions and discussing what is best for the animals involved. My primary responsibility as the Animal Care Specialist is to provide the best possible care to the animals during their scanning sessions including their pre-anesthetic care, constant monitoring during the MRI, post- anesthetic care and recovery.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and ‘fur-children’. I enjoy travelling, and I also maintain an active lifestyle through running, attending fitness classes, as well as playing basketball, hockey, soccer and volleyball.
