Imaging Research Laboratories (IRL)

The CFMM does not operate in isolation but is part of the larger Imaging Research Laboratories at the Robarts Research Institute. Under the direction and leadership of Dr. Aaron Fenster (CRC in Medical Imaging), this lab has grown phenomenally in the past decade. With more than 200 students, staff, PDFs and technicians, and 14 faculty members, these labs form one of the largest concentration of imaging researchers in North America. In addition to 2 Canada Research Chairs (Fenster, Menon) there is the Barnett-Ivey-HSFO Stroke Chair (Rutt), A Bank of Montreal Scientist (Bartha), 3 Scientist salary awardees (Drangova, Holdsworth, Foster), 3 Premier's Research Excellence Awards (PREA) recipients (Holdsworth, Menon, Bartha) and 2 Ontario Distinguished Researcher Awardees (Fenster, Menon). The Lab is a central part of two CIHR Groups: the CIHR Group on Action and Perception and the CIHR Group in Vascular Imaging. IRL members have been awarded 5 significant Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) awards and 6 Ontario Research Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF) awards since 1998. With a computer infrastructure of several hundred units and more than 40,000 sq. ft. of space, there is ample opportunity for interaction of students using all the modalities in the lab, from MR and CT, to optical methods and ultrasound. A major recent direction has been in small animal and cellular and molecular imaging. Almost half of the imaging faculty have programs in this area, with an enviable collection of micro-CT, micro-US and now micro-MR equipment.
